1907: Alexander Dowie dies in accordance with the Prophecy of the Promised Messiahas
March 1907 – Alexander Dowie who had claimed to be Elijah the restorer and prayed for the destruction of Islam was challenged by the Promised Messiah in September 1902. Dowie did not make any comment on the challenge in the december issue of his newspaper The Leaves of Healing, he did however mentioned the Promised Messiah (as) with utmost disrespect calling him foolish for claiming that Jesus (as) has died in Kashmir.
The Promised Messiah(as) issued a statement on the 23 August 1903 which was published in the Nov & Dec issue of the Review of Religions 1903 wherein he mentioned that Mr Dowie’s inability to reply to the challenge would undoubtedly result in the falsity of his claims, he added: ‘If the pretender of the Elijahship shows his willingness by any direct or indirect means to enter the lists agaisnt us, he shall leave the world before my eyes with great sorrow and torment.…..Though he may try as hard as he can to fly from the death which awaits him, yet his flight from such a mighty contest will be nothing less than death to him,and calamity will certainly overtake his Zion‘ (The Review of Religions Nov & Dec 1903 P.480)
Due to mass publication of the challenge Dowie could not ignore this challenge much longer and he replied in his September 1903 issue of the Leaves of Healing with the following: “Do you think that I shall reply to these gnats and flies?…If I put my foot on them I would crush out their lives.” He further arranged one of the largest evengelical trips to Madison Square Garden in New York to further propogate his claim in October 1903.
As per the words of the Promised Messiah (as): ‘If the pretender of the Elijahship shows his willingness by any direct or indirect means to enter the lists agaisnt us, he shall leave the world before my eyes with great sorrow and torment.‘ Alexander Dowie died a miserable death on the 7th of March 1907 after a long illness of paralysis.
